WELCOME BOOKBINDERS AND BOOK ARTISTS

Since 1983 the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild has worked to support the development of the book arts in Canada. This web site is dedicated to that effort. The book arts include bookbinding, artists' books, papermaking, calligraphy, letterpress printing and typography, wood engraving, paper decorating, restoration, and conservation.


The 2025 Betsy Palmer Eldridge Scholarship 

The Canadian Bookbinding and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) is pleased to provide the Betsy Palmer Eldridge Scholarship to one recipient a year based on need/merit. The scholarship will subsidize the tuition cost for one foundational core curriculum course (Bookbinding 1, Bookbinding 2, or Bookbinding 3). Courses offered by CBBAG either in-person or via guided Home Study are eligible.

Application window for the 2025 BPE Scholarship is September 1 to October 31, 2024.

Interested applicants must submit their completed online form by October 31, 2024.

The tue-mouche with Erin Fletcher

Translated to “flypaper”, the Tue-Mouche was developed by French bookbinder, Ben Elbel.

This structure is an easy and economical form of bookbinding. The covers are constructed entirely from heavyweight paper, layered to create rigidity and strength, while the flexible spine allows the binding to open nearly flat without constraints.

In this workshop students will learn how to create the Tue-Mouche structure from start to finish based on Ben’s tutorial.

MOving circles: volvelles with stephanie wolff

Volvelles, sometimes known as wheel charts, are tools to help explain complex concepts and relationships. These structures have been used in historic books, in promotional materials, in devices to aid computation, as well as in artistic applications. Two or more circles turn to show information through cut out windows.

This workshop covers a basic version of a volvelle and discussion of variations and ideas about incorporating content. Our focus will be on making models and learning how these devices function to create more complex and finished versions after the workshop.
